MARS GLOBAL SURVEYOR LAUNCH/VIKING FDC DOUBLE CANCELLED COVER. First cancel is the special Kennedy Space Center pictorial launch station cancel showing the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft which is clearly shown as it just ties a 29-cent Theodore von Karman/Aerospace Scientist space stamp to cover. Second cancel is a Hampton VA 07/20/78 First Day of Issue handcancel on a 15-cent Viking Mission to Mars stamp and a 3-cent Youth Month/saluting Young America stamp. No cachet on this cover. (07/20/78 was the 2nd anniversary of the first Viking landing on Mars; Hampton VA is the location of the NASA Langley Research Center, which managed the Viking Project, and the youth stamp on cover was used because teenagers were the ones who submitted drawings to NASA in a competition for the Viking emblem. Second cancel is a Hampton VA 07/20/78 First Day of Issue machine cancel on a 15-cent Viking Mission to Mars stamp, with all-purpose brown "FMF" space printed cachet showing various U.S. and Foreign space stamps, cachet text reads "Exploring the Universe". (07/20/78 was the 2nd anniversary of the first Viking landing on Mars; Hampton VA is the location of the NASA Langley Research Center, which managed the Viking Project). IMAGE
