Space Craft Covers cachet.
One of the "Space Craft Covers" cacheted covers

Space Craft Covers (SCC)
Notes

  • Space Craft Covers (SCC) are the "Cadillac's" of space cacheted covers. They were the first major producer of space event covers and consistentely covered all major space events exclusively. They distinguished themselves in the significance of their cachets, which were designed by Carl Swanson, the noted former NASA space artist. Mr. Swanson's creations were produced in a unique manned by researching the details of the event AFTER it occured. Two color cachets were applied to covers after they were cancelled insuring that all major and factual details of the cachet were correct. Many covers came with stuffer cards or paper inserts giving additional details and illustrations of the space event being commemorated.
  • Space Craft Covers was operated by Joe Fitzpatrick while Carl Swanson did all the artwork. Unfortunately when Fitzpatrick died in March 1970 the regular Space Craft cover series came to an end. Carl Swanson announced that Space Craft would only continue to provide covers for manned events, and these covers would be called "Manned Space Craft Covers". Covers under this name were issued for the remaining Apollo flights of Apollo 13 through 17. These covers will be listing in a forthcoming pricelist. However a few individual covers are already listed on my other pricelists.
  • Most space cover collectors collect the Space Craft Cover series because of their outstanding beauty, accuracy of the event being commemorated in both text and in the detailed drawing of the satellite or spacecraft.
  • Some of the postmarked covers were produced in very limited quantities and are quite scarce. This is reflected in the prices.
  • With the exception of the first few SCC covers which are only in one color, I do not give the colors of the cachet, but just list them as two color cachets.
  • Why are the majority the early Space Craft Covers cancelled with the Patrick Air Force Base Florida cancel? In the early days of the space program there were only two postmarks available for space covers, the first being Patrick Air Force Base Florida and the second being Port Canaveral. Joe Fitzpatrick, the operator of SCC believed that the Patrick Air Force Base cancel was the most appropriate as it is the official military postoffice for Cape Canaveral, where the launches took place. Port Canaveral had no connection with the launch area, it was just a small village and the "port" was a fueling station for east coast shipping. However the servicer who obtained the postmarks for SCC also had a limited amount of covers cancelled at the Port Canaveral postoffice, and so some SCC covers do exist cancelled with both the Patrick AFB and the Port Canaveral postmarks. Space Craft Covers began offering their covers with the new Cape Canaveral Postmark when it became available in 1963.
  • When the Kennedy Space Center Florida postmark became available it was not available at first for dealers to have large quantities of covers cancelled, and so SCC obtained uncacheted covers from individuals and applied its cachets to these limited quantities gathered. And so covers cancelled at Kennedy Space Center prior to the November 1969 Apollo 12 flight are quite scarce compared to the SCC covers cancelled in the quantities of 500 to 1000 for the other locations. The Kennedy Space Center Florida postmark became available to dealers for Apollo 12 and thereafter.
  • Space Craft Covers are becoming more difficult to find as more collectors become aware of them and want to specialize in this particular cachet series. Now would be the ideal time to complete or start your Space Craft Cover collection!

  • All covers have a catalog number from the "Space Craft Covers Catalog" by Charles J. Vukotich. Please see a review of this catalog in the Book Review section of this website. This catalog has many illustrations and the history of SCC. I highly recommend this catalog for your space library.
  • My Item IDs for these SCC covers listed below are slightly different than what is in the SCC catalog. The catalog does not give different numbers for a hand cancel and a machine cancel from the same postoffice. When both cancels are available and only one catalog number is given, I will give the ID number a suffix of "H" for Hand cancel or a "M" for Machine cancel. To find the SCC catalog number you will find it in the first part of the text in parenthesis, such as (SCC 105).

General Notes

  • All items are covers unless otherwise noted.
  • All covers are the standard U.S. #6 size (approximately 6 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches), as collected in the USA, unless otherwise noted.

  • All covers are cacheted unless otherwise noted. A brief description of the cachet is given of the event being commemorated.
  • If covers are autographed they are genuine, unless otherwise noted.
  • Where stamp(s) used on the item are of significance, such as being a space stamp or a flag stamp or related to the event or location, it will be described. Otherwise the stamp(s) used on the item may be a definitive issue or an unrelated commemorative issue, and will not be described.
