  • All items are covers unless otherwise noted.
  • All covers are the standard U.S. #6 size (approximately 6 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches), as collected in the USA, unless otherwise noted.
  • Foreign covers may be slightly smaller in size than the standard U.S. #6 size and if so, their size will NOT be noted. Any cover larger than a number 6 size will be noted or any item of an unordinary size will be so noted.
  • All covers are unaddressed unless otherwise noted.
  • All covers are cacheted unless otherwise noted. A brief description of the cachet is given of the event being commemorated.
  • If covers are autographed they are genuine, unless otherwise noted.
  • Where stamp(s) used on the item are of significance, such as being a space stamp or a flag stamp or related to the event or location, it will be described. Otherwise the stamp(s) used on the item may be a definitive issue or an unrelated commemorative issue, and will not be described.

JOHN MANKE, early experimental test pilot, AU on X-24 lifting body flight cover. AU inscribed "John Manke, The X-24 is one of three lifting bodies being flight tested. The other two are the HL-10 and the M2-F3.", cover cancelled Edwards CA, 05-25-71, with servicers 4 line word rubber stamp cachet reading "X-24, Rocket Propelled Lifting Body, Edwards AFB. (Note: the X-24 lifting body were used to test Space Shuttle techniques).

BRUCE PETERSON. Early experimental research test pilot for the lifting body aircraft and other aircraft. He was also selected as an X-20 DynaSoar Pilot. Autographed and inscribed: "Bruce Peterson, NASA Lifting Body Test Pilot", on a STS-1 second day of flight commemorative cover, with a Houston TX machine cancel on a airmail border envelope, (cancel is light but readable) and a black rubber stamp word cachet (unidentified) that reads: " STS- 1 Space Shuttle Mission". Front of cover has a typed return address of "Photo Technology Div., JL-3-NASA, L.B. Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas 77058". (Peterson was a NASA Dryden research pilot from the early 1960s until 1967. He tested the Rogallo paraglider research vehicle (Parasev), he also flew the M2-F1 and M2-F2 lifting bodys and the HL-10 lifting body M2-F2. later he was a Research Project Engineer on the Digital Fly-By-Wire program).
