| FORREST S. PETERSEN (deceased). Early experimental test pilot for the X-15 rocket plane. Autographed & inscribed: "Forrest S. Petersen, X-15 Research Pilot, 8/58 to 1/62", on a Jules Verne 150th anniversary of birth cover. With a pictorial hand cancel of Chicago Philatelic Society Exh. Sta. Chicago IL showing a stylized rocket, on a 15 cent Flag stamp. Cachet is a 10 cent FMF Local Post imperf. single stamp + label, honoring Jules Verne, showing a rocket & a space capsule going to the Moon, which is locally tied by a "FMF Travel Local Post, first day of issue" cancel, & additional text rubber stamp that reads "150th Anniversary of Birth." (In Aug. 1958 he was assigned duties as Research Pilot in the X-15 Program & served at the NASA Flight Research Center at Edwards, California. He made 5 free flights in the X-15 rocket plane & achieved a speed of 3,600mph [Mach 5.3] & an altitude of about 102,000 feet. Petersen died on 08 Dec 1990.) IMAGE | ||||
