Special sale of FMF Local Post First day Covers (First Day of the Local Post stamp) and commemorative covers issued by Joseph J. Frasketi, of Fort Myers FL, where this local post is located.

What is a Local Post? its an independent mail system or service not connected with the U.S. Postal System, for delivering mail. However a local post may work in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service. A local post can issued its own local post stamps and have local post cancels. If local post stamps are used on envelopes that are to be mailed they also must bear a U.S. postage stamp in order to be delivered. Today most local posts are philatelic in nature, and can be a lot of fun if you have one.

The FMF Local Post is a philatelic one, it began in 1972 and continues in operation today, issuing its own local post stamps on many topics, mostly space, however special issues were prepared in 1977 for Charles Lindbergh as described in the listings below.

Examples of what local post covers look like click to see these covers from 3 different posts:

Thomas Edison - FMF Local Post cover ,
Astronaut Shepard - NASA Local Post cover , and
Aviation - Ascension AAF Local Post cover .

These FMF Local Post covers below all have a local post stamp affixed and locally cancelled plus having additional text or pictorial rubber stamp cachets and were issued for events in the life of airmail pilot Charles A. Lindbergh. Lindbergh's most famous flight was in the monoplane aircraft "Spirit of St. Louis". Lindbergh became the first to fly non-stop between New York and Paris on May 20, 1927.

Many covers will have the #1710 Lindbergh 50th Anniversary Solo Transatlantic Flight stamp on them.

Strange as it may seem, Lindbergh's name is not mentioned on this stamp! Although Lindbergh died in 1974, it was the practice of the U.S. Postal Service in 1977 not to mention the name of any person on a postage stamp until they were dead at least 10 years (with the exception of U.S. presidents). Thus this stamp honors only the 50th anniversary of the first transatlantic flight (but Lindbergh was the pilot).

An 87 city "Commemorative Tour" of the same cities that Lindbergh toured in 1927 was held from July 1977 to October 1977 in a replica of the Spirit of St. Louis aircraft. Many of these cities issued a special cancel for this Lindbergh Commemorative tour, and many are offered below.

  • All covers are the standard U.S. size (number 6), as collected in the USA, unless otherwise noted.
  • All covers are unaddressed unless otherwise noted.
  • All covers are cacheted and a brief description is given of the event being commemorated, unless otherwise noted.
  • If covers are autographed they are genuine.
  • Many of the covers below have the local post stamp tied to cover by the U.S. Postal Service pictorial hand cancellation.
  • Please print out the ON-LINE ORDER FORM and use it to mark down the covers you need. When ordering, please mark the LIST ID as well as ITEM ID.

Catalog Number Notes

Many covers listed below have cachets that are shown Ansink's Catalog of Lindbergh- 50th Anniversary Transatlantic Flight First Day Covers . if so, the Ansink number is given in paranthesis, for indentification purposes only, as these covers below are not First Day Covers.
