  • Not all of my Russian (USSR) covers are in these alphabetical lists, or country lists, other covers are included in lists such as: Halley's Comet Covers list, the General Air and Space Covers lists, Smithsonian Milestones of Flight Commemorative Covers list, USSR Space Flight Covers with SWANSON Printed Cachets list, etc. etc.

General Notes

  • All items are covers unless otherwise noted.
  • All covers are the standard U.S. #6 size (approximately 6 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches), as collected in the USA, unless otherwise noted.
  • Foreign covers may be slightly smaller in size than the standard U.S. #6 size and if so, their size will NOT be noted. Any cover larger than a number 6 size will be noted or any item of an unordinary size will be so noted.
  • All covers are unaddressed unless otherwise noted.
  • All covers are cacheted unless otherwise noted. A brief description of the cachet is given of the event being commemorated.
  • If covers are autographed they are genuine, unless otherwise noted.
  • Where stamp(s) used on the item are of significance, such as being a space stamp or a flag stamp or related to the event or location, it will be described. Otherwise the stamp(s) used on the item may be a definitive issue or an unrelated commemorative issue, and will not be described.
  • Items listed here may not be listed in any particular order.

RUSSIA: LUNA 16 SOUVENIR SHEET FIRST DAY COVER (#3801), with a red hand cancel of Moscow, Dec. 18, 1970, on a perforated souvenir sheet of 3 stamps (all 20k value) commemorating the successful landing of the Luna 16 spacecraft on the moon: stamps show Luna 16 in space, Luna 16 leaving the moon, and Luna 16 capsule landing on earth. With two color first day printed cachet depicting a space colony on a planet with cosmonauts, rocket and radar, and large moon in the background. (note these stamps are slightly different from the 3 Luna 16 single stamps issued on Dec. 28, 1970, as these stamps have attached labels and the values are different).

RUSSIA: LUNA 17 SET OF 4 FIRST DAY COVERS (#3834-3837), Four covers each with a single stamp having a black pictorial first day of issue hand cancel of Moscow, March 16, 1971 that shows the Luna 17 spacecraft on the moon, the 4 stamps: 10k Luna 17 on the moon; 12k Luna 17 ground control; 12k separation of Lunokhod 1 and carrier; 16k Lunokhod 1 in operation . With multicolored first day printed cachet depicting the Lunokhod 1 on the moon with earth in the background, same cachet on all 4 FDC's. Cover size 4-1/2x6 inches. (These stamps were issued for the Luna 17 unmanned automated moon mission, Nov. 10-17, 1970). (NOTE: The image shown is one of the first day covers in this set of 4.) IMAGE

RUSSIA: LUNA 17 SOUVENIR SHEET FIRST DAY COVER (#3837a), with a black pictorial first day of issue hand cancel of Moscow, March 16, 1971 that shows the Luna 17 spacecraft on the moon, the perforated souvenir sheet has 4 stamps: 10k Luna 17 on the moon; 12k Luna 17 ground control; 12k separation of Lunokhod 1 and carrier; 16k Lunokhod 1 in operation . With multicolored first day printed cachet depicting the Lunokhod 1 on the moon with earth in the background. Cover size 4-1/2x6 inches. (note souvenir sheet was issued for the Luna 17 unmanned automated moon mission, Nov. 10-17, 1970).

RUSSIA: SPACE RESEARCH FIRST DAY COVER (#3841), with a black pictorial first day of issue hand cancel of Moscow, March 30, 1971 that shows a rocket launch for 10th anniversary of manned flight. Single 12k stamp on cover showing various space themes and manned Soyuz spacecraft over earth. With multicolored first day printed cachet depicting the Vostok spacecraft in space. Cover size 4-1/2x6 inches. (note this stamp was issued for Cosmonauts Day, April 12). IMAGE

RUSSIA: SOYUZ AND SALUT SPACECRAFT FIRST DAY COVER (#3962), with a black first day of issue hand cancel of Moscow, April 5, 1972, on 6k space stamp, which shows the orbital station Salute docked with the Soyuz spaceship over the earth. With multicolored first day printed cachet showing two cosmonauts looking out of a spacecraft window at orbiting soyuz spacecraft.
