Notes

Special sale of commemorative covers issued by various dealers for events in the life of Charles Lindbergh commemorating the flight of Airmail Pilot Charles A. Lindbergh, whose most famous flight was in the monoplane aircraft "Spirit of St. Louis". Lindbergh became the first to fly non-stop between New York and Paris on May 20, 1927.

Many covers will have the #1710 Lindbergh 50th Anniversary Solo Transatlantic Flight stamp on them.

Strange as it may seem, Lindbergh's name is not mentioned on this stamp! Although Lindbergh died in 1974, it was the practice of the U.S. Postal Service in 1977 not to mention the name of any person on a postage stamp until they were dead at least 10 years (with the exception of U.S. presidents). Thus this stamp honors only the 50th anniversary of the first transatlantic flight (but Lindbergh was the pilot).

An 87 city "Commemorative Tour" of the same cities that Lindbergh toured in 1927 was held from July 1977 to October 1977 in a replica of the Spirit of St. Louis aircraft. Many of these cities issued a special cancel for this Lindbergh Commemorative tour, and some are offered below.

  • All covers are the standard U.S. size (number 6), as collected in the USA, unless otherwise noted.
  • All covers are unaddressed unless otherwise noted.
  • All covers are cacheted and a brief description is given of the event being commemorated, unless otherwise noted.
  • If covers are autographed they are genuine.
  • Please print out the ON-LINE ORDER FORM and use it to mark down the covers you need. When ordering, please mark the LIST ID as well as ITEM ID.
