General Notes

  • #1. A wide variety of anniversary covers for the Apollo 11 flight are on this list from launch (July 16) to recovery (July 24), and the days inbetween.
  • #2. Covers are listed in chronological order, the first anniversary at the beginning of the list, the latest anniversary at the end of the list.
  • #3. There may be a few other covers relating to the Apollo 11 anniversary that are included here that don't fall into the #1 catagory above, but :

General Notes

  • All items are covers unless otherwise noted.
  • All covers are the standard U.S. #6 size (approximately 6 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches), as collected in the USA, unless otherwise noted.
  • Foreign covers may be slightly smaller in size than the standard U.S. #6 size and if so, their size will NOT be noted. Any cover larger than a number 6 size will be noted or any item of an unordinary size will be so noted.
  • All covers are unaddressed unless otherwise noted.
  • All covers are cacheted unless otherwise noted. A brief description of the cachet is given of the event being commemorated.
  • If covers are autographed they are genuine, unless otherwise noted.
  • Where stamp(s) used on the item are of significance, such as being a space stamp or a flag stamp or related to the event or location, it will be described. Otherwise the stamp(s) used on the item may be a definitive issue or an unrelated commemorative issue, and will not be described.
  • Items listed here may not be listed in any particular order.

APOLLO 11 LAUNCH AND FIRST ANNIVERSARY, SPECIAL DOUBLE CANCELLED COVER. First cancel is dated July 16, 1969 with a Cape Canaveral FL machine cancel on Apollo 8 stamp (for the launch of Apollo 11). Second cancel is July 20, 1970 with a Cape Canaveral FL hand cancel on an Apollo 11 stamp #C76, (for the 1st anniversary of the first Moon Landing). With a blue DOW-UNICOVER printed cachet for Apollo 11, of the Apollo 11 astronauts heads in their space suit with their names down the left side of the envelope. The main part of the cachet is a drawing showing the first step on the Moon, with text: "Apollo XI the First Step", with additional text on the cachet: "Project Apollo, First Manned Lunar Landing." The DOW-UNICOVER name is at the bottom of the cachet.

APOLLO 11 LAUNCH AND FIRST ANNIVERSARY, SPECIAL DOUBLE CANCELLED COVER. First cancel is dated July 20, 1969 with a Cape Canaveral FL machine cancel on Apollo 8 stamp (for the launch of Apollo 11). Second cancel is a private hand cancel with circular "Moon Landing USA, 07/20/1969" cancel with wording "First Anniversary 1970" inside of 4 killer bars.This private cancel in on a USA Apollo 11 Moon Landing stamp, #C76. With a blue DOW-UNICOVER printed cachet for Apollo 11, of the Apollo 11 astronauts heads in their space suit with their names down the left side of the envelope. The main part of the cachet is a drawing showing the first step on the Moon, with text: "Apollo XI the First Step", with additional text on the cachet: "Project Apollo, First Manned Lunar Landing." The DOW-UNICOVER name is at the bottom of the cachet. (A very UNUSUAL cover)!

NOTE: the launch complex becomes a national historic landmark on this date.

With a Milestone of Flight printed cachet, number 17, from the Smithsonian Institution National Air & Space Museum, showing a multicolored Apollo 11 emblem and printed text that reads in part: "5th Anniversary Apollo 11 Mission, Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin Jr., July 16-24, 1969."

10th ANNIVERSARY, WERNHER VON BRAUN PICTORIAL AUSTRIAN CANCELLED CARD, with a Gmund Austria hand cancel of July 21, 1979 showing Dr. Von Braun, the Saturn/Apollo 11 rocket launch and Moon footprint, and word text in German (for the 10th Anniversary of the first Moonlanding, and 20th year of GWF?). With red printed cachet of the Apollo 11 emblem/patch and two small logos, one which is the FISA, and 14 lines of printed text all in German, the first line reading "Der Adler 1st Gelandet" which roughly translates: "the Eagle 1st landed" (the Apollo 11 lunar module which landed on the Moon was called the Eagle). Cancel is on card which has a gold colored border. IMAGE
