Notes

  • APOLLO 13 was the third manned flight to the Moon however there was an explosion in the spacecraft that aborted a lunar landing.
  • The astronauts on this flight were:
  • James Lovell, Jr., the Commander
  • John Swigert, Jr., the Command Module Pilot and
  • Fred Haise, Jr., the Lunar Module Pilot.
  • This flight was considered a "successful failure" because of the experience in rescuing the astronauts.
  • Significant dates of the Apollo 13 flight:
  • 04/11/1970 Launch date
  • 04/13/1970 Explosion aboard the Service Module
  • 04/14/1970 Crucial loop around the Moon
  • 04/17/1970 Splashdown date

APOLLO 13 LAUNCH & MOON LANDING ABORTED DOUBLE CANCELLED COVER., with a 04/11/1970 machine cancel of Cape Canaveral FL on a 10 cent Apollo 11 "First Man on the Moon" space stamp (#C76) for the launch of Apollo 13, cover again received a 04/13/1970 "P.M." hand cancel on a 6 cent Apollo 8 "Earth from the Moon" space stamp (#1371). This is the date the Apollo 13 explosion occurred. With a LUNAR VOYAGE printed cachet in gray and flesh toned colors, showing the 3 apollo 13 astronauts, the explosion, the moon loop and the astronauts after their recovery. With text: "Unlucky APOLLO 13, Launch 4-11, oxygen tank explosion 4-13, moon loop 4-14, astronauts safe return 4-17". Cachet also identifies the 3 astronauts and shows small facsimile signatures of the astronauts.

This is the date the Apollo 13 explosion occured. With a raised CENTENNIAL (unidentified) printed cachet in black, showing an astronaut leaving the damaged Apollo 13 capsule and entering the Lunar Module, with text: "APOLLO 13, April 13, 1970, Trouble hits Moon Command Ship, Astronauts move to the Lunar Module. Moon Landing Abandoned". NOTE: top left corner of cover is bent, as shown in the image, price has been reduced accordingly. IMAGE

APOLLO 13 SAFE RETURN (SPLASHDOWN) COMMEMORATIVE COVER - JULES VERNE CACHET, With a machine cancel from Cape Canaveral FL April 17, 1970 on a 10 cent First Man on Moon stamp (#C76). With a black and red Kenmore Stamp Company printed cachet commemorating Apollo 13 safe return, with word text: "The World Unites in Saluting the Courage and Coolness of These Heroic men of Apollo XIII, James Lovell, John Swiegert, Fred Haise." Cachet depicts an early space capsule blasting off, with word text "A 100 year old wood cut from Jules Verne's novel, 'From the Earth to the Moon' showing the 1868 spaceship blasting off from a giant cannon in Florida." There is also word text commemorating the Apollo 13 moonlanding (which never took place due to the explosion and has an uncanny remark...which reads in part: The most perilious Moon Mission yet attempted!)". Kenmore Stamp Company printed address.
