Comments: I worked for RCA on the American Mariner from early 1960 thru Dec. 1963. By the end of my stay aboard, I was the Instrumentation Manager. The Mariner worked in the Ascension area, Caribbean area, and also supported the high altitude nuclear tests at Johnson Isl. in the Pacific in 1962. The top RCA managers during my stay were: Joe Kaiser, J. T. Hiles, and Fred Ise. The most memorable stops the Mariner made during my stay included Recife, BR; Cape Town; and Honolulu. The time served aboard the Mariner represents an important period of my life experience. I met and worked with a number of very talented and fine individuals.

Comments: I went Down Range right out of UEI Tech School in Tampa January 1975. Worked TM on Grand Turk, Antigua, but mostly Ascension on the TAA-3A.

After a year on the ETR I went for a tour to Kwajalein Missile Range in the Pacific. Two years with Kentron International. Then changed jobs with RCA staying on Kwajalein and Roi-Namur islands for more three years.

Getting tired of island life I transfered to Alaska with RCA. Lasted almost a year with the Chosen Frozen, just outside of Nome, at Tin City AFS.

After five years in Auburndale, Florida, I return to Kwajalein for seven more years working on the ALTAIR RADAR (GTE). Eight more years in Florida and back to Kwajalein this time with KRS (Kwajalein Range Services) for two years, working ALTAIR again, then Range Safety.

PCS there for a job with Raytheon working the new ASR 11, DASR Radar.

Feb. 2008 started working Raytheon St. Petersburg, Florida. Here I plan to stay for awhile, but, once a Range Rat, you always have than in your blood. What we do at Raytheon is important for the military. Just not the same as tracking space ships.

Comments: My first range experience was on the last mission with the American Mariner, August 1965. I then made some trips on the Vanderberg and Arnold as a Telemetry Sr. Tech until August of 1966. I then packed up the family (wife and four kids) and pulled a trailer with a VW bug across country to Quincy, Mass. while the three Apollo ships were being built. Permanently assigned to the USNS Mercury as the Telemetry Supervisor through Apollo 10. Watched the moon landings from home. Have talked with Bill Connell a few times since then. Those four years were some of the greatest experiences of my life. Paul Alford found me and now communicate via Ham Radio (W7VZ). I feel honored to be counted among you real Range Rats.

Comments: I started out with RCA/MTP in July,1965. Then to Eleuthera for a few months of Tech Training while awaiting the USNS American Mariner to arrive at Port Canaveral. I rode the Mariner downrange to Trinidad, then to Recife. Next to Ascension to transport a load of local workers back to St. Helena Island. Then back to the Cape via Recife again. Next it was off to the West Coast for several cruises on the Vandenberg and Arnold. Made it to Midway, Guam, Japan, the Philippines, the North Pacific, Christmas Island, and many runs between Kwajelein aand Honolulu. Also several yard visits to San Diego, Alameda, Richmond, & Portland. After 2 1/2 years of sailing went to Goddard in 1968 in the Multisat & IUE control centers and the Optical Research Facility working with the Moblas trackers deployed to San Diego, Grand Turk, Wallops, & Patrick AFB. Came back to Florida in 1978 to work the Shuttle and am still at it today for another couple of years. I really feel lucky to have been a part of it all.

Comments: Joe,

I served in USNS Mercury T-AGM 21 from May 1967 until NASA released us from support in August of 1969. I ended up as the FPS-16 Group Leader with Russ Perkins as our Instrumentation Manager and Bill Oches as our Ships Manager. We certainly enjoyed our time supporting the Apollo missions 6 through 11. Since then I have been working at the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai in Hawaii as a radar technician, radar supervisor, and now, radar systems manager. When I first arrived at PMRF I worked with Bill Karnopp on the MPS-25 S/N-5 that was originally stationed in Pretoria, South Africa. He and I went to Johnston Atoll twice and spent a couple of weeks supporting Air Force missions on the MPS-25 S/N-4 there before he moved on. Great to see a site dedicated to those of us that spent our time working the range instrumentation systems and making sure our astronauts had safe trips out and back.
Another Range Rat I worked with here at PMRF is Jim Roberts. He was on the American Mariner for some time and then came out to Hawaii to work at the range and finally retired here.

Aloha,

Ray

Comments: I just wanted to share that on Mar.6 2008 my uncle Robert E. Shean passed away.

He served for many years with pride on the USNS Redstone AGM-20.

I am now 44 yrs old but I remember as a kid in the '70s seeing the ship docked in New York at what I guess was still the Brooklyn ship yards.

Driving past her on the highway and seeing the gleeming white majesty of her near 600 feet length and the radar domes was probably one of the coolest things I'd seen up to that time and I couldn't wait to hear my uncle's tales of the sea.

While my uncle was born in Brooklyn NY, his adoptive home was Port Canaveral FL. and while attending technical school in Orlando in the late 80s I was finaly able to see the ship up close and go aboard with my uncle and check her out up close.
Being able to stand on the bridge and look out over her is a lifetime memory for me, and while he was then retired, you could tell from the tone of his voice that if he could he'd sail with her again tommorrow.

My uncle was a lifelong sailor, spending some 40 yrs at sea joining the Navy for WW2 and Korea, then sailing with the MSTS/MSC aboard the Redstone, and while he eventually married a women he loved very much (who always patiently awaited his return to port) I always had a feeling that the Redstone was his best girl.

My uncle Bobby was 83 years old and Neptune has called him home. He will be missed.

Comments: hello Joe. I worked for RCA from Sept 60 until Feb 73 mostly on tracking radar systems, about 3 years on GBI, 5 years in Pretoria,S.A. and 5 years on Ascenion Isl. A little on the FPS-8 at GBI, then the MOD-2, then the XN-2 and briefly the Mipir. Went to Pretoria in April of 62 to work the MPS-25, then to Ascension for the FPS-16 and the TPQ-18 (Mipir) until it was removed. Although I've been gone for many years I still think of myself as a radar tech and really miss what I thought of as importan t work. I made many trips to Letterbox while on Ascension and signed the Logbook. I miss those early days.

Comments: I finished 4 years in the USCG and signed up with RCA at the Tech Lab to go to Ascension January 1960 as a Comm Center Operator, at that time you had to know Morse Code. The pay was $75.00 a week plus a 40% bonus for Ascension. I was there for about 12 or 14 months (been too long ago to remember).
Chris Nielson was in charge of our crew. My best friend was Rebel (the donkey). Oh yeah, Jim Ketchum, Ellis Berger, Ken Murphy also. We did alot of snorkeling and started a dive club "Ascension Divers". I hope it still exists. We had a member (cant recall name) from Wyoming and didn't know how to swim but we taught him how to use flippers, mask and snorkel and he eventually qualified as an
official Club member.
Those were some of the best days of my life. I also spent time on GBI which was ok but couldn't compare with ASC

After we departed Antigua we moved here to Merritt Island and I worked at Tel-4 through the 80's and into the 90's. I worked my way up the food chain until I became Telemetry System Manager in 1991. I stayed at Tel-4 until the boss asked me to become the Operation/Engineering Liaison at Patrick in 1995 and I worked at the Tech Lab for the next 5 years. In 1999 it was back to Tel-4 as Telemetry Supervisor until my departure in Nov. 2007. Going into Retirement is our current effort and we are really looking forward to it. For those that might be interested...our Daughter Nina is at the university of South Carolina in Greenville getting her teaching degree and our son Nick is getting ready to go into the Coast Guard in March 08

Working on the Range during the period I was there was like no other place or time that I can think of. It was the people that made it. We still know and keep in touch with a lot of our friends from those days...what great memories !!!

Hi to you all

Comments: I hired on with RCA/MTP in 1981 and worked at Antigua radar for 4 years. I transferred up to Patrick to the Testbed radar for about a year then moved on to the Redstone radar section for another 4 years. Transferred to the Cape radar for another 6 years and then turned in my toolbox to work as Radar Controller. Presently working in Range Operations as Radar/Command planner.

I've been living in the Merrit Island area since 1985 after leaving Antigua.
I recognize a bunch of people on here I've had the pleasure to work with through the years. Rest assured I'm still paying the government my FICA taxes so you can enjoy your retirement.

Comments: I worked on the Vandenberg from 1968 to 1970 in navigation with Hugh Lowe, Jake Jacobsen, Jim Witcher, Johnny Kellams, Charlie Birdsong, and others whose names escape me at the moment. I was the star tracker "guru". Some will remember me as the designer/builder of our on-board radio station KCUF at 690 kHz AM and 96.0 MHz FM. I also caused quite a stir when I traded souvenirs with folks on the Russian boat that followed us around off the coast of Kamchatka. When I left the ship, I moved to southern California and started my career in the professional audio business, working as an analog circuit designer for Capitol Records and Laserium, among others. I now own Jensen Transformers, makers of the world's best audio transformers for professional use - see www.jensen-transformers.com. I hold several patents, and have become a recognized expert on signal interfaces and ground loops - I was recently an invited lecturer at MIT.

Two years at the MPS-25 radar at Pretoria, South Africa. A short time at the Trinidad radar, and ended my downrange career at the On axis radar 3.13 at Grand Bahama. I left RCA for a short time and worked for Dynalectron and was assigned to the USNS Wheeling tracking ship out of Point Mugu, CA. Returned to RCA in 1973 as radar technician at White Sands, and worked on FPS-16 and MPS-36 radars. Left White Sands in 1977 and became RCA's site manager at the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Grounds, Yuma, AZ. Returned to the Eastern Range in 1979 and was assigned to Radar's System Support Group. Became site leader of the Merritt Island MIPIR, 19,14 about 1987. Continued on with CSR after G.E. lost the contract in 1988. Retired from CSR in 2004.

Comments: I was hired in Sept. of 1955 and worked for 'Hoot' Ringo in Range Survellience. From there it was to Telemetry, Timing & Firing. Telemetry broke away as it was all too much for one manager. I worked for Mel Patrick until he went back down range. We hired my husband, John Thorne, in May of 1956. If we make it until May, we will be married 49 years. Took care of a lot of insurance, etc. for the guys we sent down range. The 18 month tax law no longer exists. I met so many people. I worked for Fred Kennedy at AZUSA Mark II. Then Konklin Martin for CW Tracking. We had all the radars, LORAC, LORAN, etc. Thanks for the memories. Mary Lynn Thorne

I have never seen so many people do so much that had never been done before. It truly was the last frontier. Our engineers, etc., developed everything from the transistor to everyday things we use today. I am proud to have spent 15 years and proud of the knowledge I picked up.

We were there; in crowded Quonsets, in one-quarter mile chow lines, in drinking salt water and eating green eggs, in many c-grade movies, in 18-hour/7-day work schedules and...in four hundred dollars per month pay. I traveled the range from CC and various Florida East coast LORAN sites, the Abaco cays, Bahamas, BWI, Trinadad, and Ascension Is. (never made it to SA or Mahe). Also did work on many of the tracking ships and did sea time on the Arnold a few times.
I worked for George Jones and Bill Belomany in the shop. Some of my co-workers were Jerry Worley, Bill Brashear, Bill Ball, Ken Woods, Charlie Jackson, Willie Carter and the notorious Artie Todd.
I also did a 5 week stint with RCA BMEWS in Thule (1972 I think.)
I left RCA in 1978 after a motorcycle accident did major damage to my left arm and I couldn't climb towers/poles/etc. anymore. After various jobs boatbuilding, cabinetmaking, furniture making I ended up doing UNIX and network support for the Univ of Arkansas in Little Rock (retired 2004.)

Comments: I worked for RCA MTP from 1965 until 1978 in Marine and Optics as a ship navigation analyst. I occasionally rode the Twin Falls, the Redstone, etc. going as far as the Indian Ocean.
I'm a range rat because Sam Boroughs and I went to GBI overnight, then by helicopter to Whale Cay, Abacos. We set up our field "base" and were supporting co-worker Ed French on a navigation accuracy test of the Compass Island. We established a radio ranging transponder over a geodetic benchmark for ranging to the ship. We only camped there 3 to 5 days, I recall the brilliant comet Kohoutek near the horizon.
I rode the Redstone in support of sonar transponder surveys, the "pickle barrels" used as Navy ICBM targets. Back at the AF Tech Lab, I sheparded the sonar data through the data processing to generate the geodetic positions of each transponder. I earned a master's degree in Space Technology at Florida Tech in 1968.
I then went to Harris Corp. in 1978 for 21 years in systems engineering, retiring in 1999. I now teach the renewable energy course at Florida Institute of Technology as an adjunct professor, the university that Dr. Jerome Keuper started in 1958 on a first donation of 37 cents pocket change at a bar. At one time, Dr. Harry Weber was my dep't head (then called Quality Analysis). Harry is now a trustee for Florida Tech.

What a great experience being on the range!

Joined the Twin Falls in Port Canaveral and remained aboard 'til her life ended, then was one of the first to join the Redstone on her arrival to the Eastern range. I went into private business in 1974, then returned to RCA and the Redstone in 1984. From '86 to '88 I was assigned to the Observation Island, then returned to the Redstone. I came to the Cape in 1993 where I still work at the ROCC as site maintenance engineer. Among my most memorable experiences: spending 33-days in Recife under the guidance of Leo Feldmeier; receiving ship's indocrination from Carl Barone and the rest of the great PAA/RCA crew on the Sword Knot; having the privilege of working for Wally Tubell, and seeing the best of the world riding the Range ships.

Comments: I just wanted to add a few more details about my involvement with Volcano Radio (ZD8VR). I was stationed with the USAF (Det 215) on Ascension from May 70 through May 71. While there I was heavily involved with VR as Assistant Station Manager, Program Director, Assistant Station Engineer, and a DJ as well (the part I enjoyed the most!). I worked closely with Mr JP Morgan (who worked for RCA, I believe). JP pretty much ran the station while I was there. I also worked with SSgt Ed Baum (from the Det 215 crowd as well). My on-air name was Dick Adams (and I had a "sidekick" named Tex (was also me). I thoroughly enjoyed my work at VR! I even produced some home-made promos: "Your voice in the South Atlantic", etc. and the station bought a professionally done promo from PAMS of Dallas that had a group sing "Volcano Radio." Big time stuff :-D While I was there we had AM and FM and part way through my tour the FM was changed to STEREO. Programming on AM was about half AFRTS-provided and half live during the day and all AFRTS over night. The FM was all automatic from a carousel that we loaded every day with LPs!

If anyone would like to share memories or was there during the time that I was, I'd love to hear from you.

It was located near comfortless cove. I was one of the SOI analysts there and still fondly remember the Island, the base and the people!

I volunteered as a DJ at the AFRTS station there (Volcano radio) and my show "This Is My Song" featured albums from broadway musicals.

I also volunteered as a reporter for the Islander newspaper and I think my my best article was a satirical piece that commented on the numerous truck accidents that the Saints (Saint Helena people) were having at the time.

Comments: Went to work for RCA MTP in 1961 on the Twin Falls Victory, SPN-8 and FPS-16 radars(1961-63). Also spent a couple of months on the American Mariner. From there 10 months on San Sal on the FPS-16. San Sal scaled back about that time (1964?) and most of the RCA techs were reassigned. I was sent to Antigua, but left RCA a couple of months later. From there I went to work for NAA at the Cape on the Apollo Program until 1968. Late in 1968 went to work for Bendix FE in Tananarive, Madagascar. Took my bride with me. Later, we were assigned to Bermuda. In 1971 I left the Range for good. I'll be glad to hear from anyone.

I do remember the party at Carterville when Andy Porter
took over from Woody.. Fred Leth danced on the bar singing, Truly Fair, Then all the radar troops pretended to whip up on the radar manager Joe Petrone. You should have seen the look on the new IM's face(Andy Porter).
That's one of a few stories from my 29 years with RCA..about 25 of them on the Range UP&DOWN. ps. Does any one remember the Columbus Day Party that David Wolper produced for TV? They had a house out past the FPS-16 Site.

Comments: Hello to all old range rats

From 1965 to about Oct. 1969 I worked with RCA and Federal
Electric.
For RCA I worked on the USNS Mercury while it was
in the shipyard at Quincy. Then on the USNS Vanguard at the cape
while it was being turned over to Federal Electric. Then I went
to The USNS Coastral Sentry in Japan and Australia.
Then to Goddard Space flight center. Did not like it there.
Federal Electric contacted me and I hired on with them and went
back to Australia on the USNS Mercury. Stayed with them through
Apollo 11 and they disbanded us in California.

Anyone that remembers me send an Email
Especially the heart playing rats from the Coastal Sentry
We spent many nights after dinner playing hearts in the middle of the Pacific

Cheers to all

And also a hello to the Range Rat Motorcycle Club from the USNS Mercury. I still ride at 65 years old

Comments: Sorry, I did not include my personal history in my earlier post.

I joined RCA n 1956, replacing Norm Tucker in Tech Training (Timing and Firing). A year later, I followed Norm to Ops Planning, when he went down range as Manager Timing and Telemetry (at Grand Turk I think).

In 1961 I moved up to Ops Programs as Ops Programs Engineer (OPE) for several programs including ABRES, Space Track (OD 066) and Foreign Technology (OD 097).

I became Leader, Orbital Ops at the Cape in September of 1965. I made many trips downrange on TDY but was never PCS downrange.
I left RCA in 1973 (after the re-arrangement and pay cut) to work for ITT at VAFB, then came back to RCA and AUTEC in 1980. From there to Jim Moore and GEODSS at White Sands, then to Ed Lauden's Radar Contract until we lost that contract in 1985. Finished my career at JPL, retiring in 1944.

Comments: Just found this site, and thanks for all who set it up and made entries. Was lucky enoiugh to be a Range Rat on the Atlantic and Pacific Missile Ranges and as well the NASA site in Pretoria. Met Russ Reed while working at Ratrick for Pan Am in the late 50's, and he convinced me quickly that down range was where I belonged. Was at SAL and MGZ from 1959-1961 and saw a world of things happen in that short time. Then to South Point Hawaii for Bendix, and then back to the Cape with NASA, when I took a TM van to Pretoria to record the opening of the ECHO balloon as it rose over the South Pole from a Vandenberg launch. Then took over Range Operations at Vandenberg for NASA before leaving and ending up working for the Canadian Soace Agency, where I am today. Spent the afternoon reading names I remember with a great deal of humor and fondness: Wally Wallace, Bob Baker, Herb Sayer, Ron Halter, Russ Reed, Charlie Mendez,... not to mention missing names like Bert Niro, Joe Robertson, and who can forget Andy Porter and Joe Petrone, who taught many of us all we ever knew about range instrumentation...

Comments: Remembering some of the Bob's at Ascension during the mid-'60's; Bob Husby, Bob Shaffer, Bob McIntire, Bob Day, Bob Johnson, Bob Douglas and others to make a host of Bobs!
I roomed with Husby and Shaffer for a couple of years each and can attest to their being "real characters". Shaffer's "Tents and Towers of Arabia" is a good read of his exploits during WW2 as a member of the State Department driving around the deserts of North Africa handing out bunles of money in order to buy Arab alliance. Doug Rogers has the only copy I know of.
Bob Shaffer died in N.Y. in the '80's and Bob Husby died at Freeport GBI in '92. They were true Range Rats, the likes of which I still miss.
Does anyone know whatever happened to Warren Way - the "Pig Roast King" - and Al Huff (two more "real characters")?

Comments: I was assigned to the Vandenberg as Technical Operations Manager in 1969 during Ivy Green intelligence operations against Mid-Pac Soviet missile tests. I was USAF at the time, but worked closely with PanAm and RCA people as well as my own security troops from Kelly AFB. I remember with particular gratitude Cliff Wolfe who taught us Judo in the balloon hangar. Anyone know where he is these days?

Mark

Comments: I worked in the Cays off Grand Bahama and Abaco in 1960-1962. I started in August of 1960 after I got out of the Navy. I saw an ad for RCA in the Atlanta Newspaper and drove down to PAFB for interviews and testing and was assigned to Grand Bahama after I was hired. I spent about 1 week at GBAAFB before being transferred to Carter Cay. I also worked on Allan’s Cay with only one other PAA employee. I remember my first manager at Carter Cay was Bill Mackey who later transferred farther downrange. I have a website with some pictures at http://classof56.topcities.com/page2/missile_range_1960.htm which is a page from my high school website. My first job on Carter’s was working with the high power transmitters used for navigation of the ships using a system called LORAC (not LORAN) that was also used by the oil drilling ships. I will have to try to remember some of the guys I worked with for that 2 years.
